autodidact | soundworker | freespirit

Last time somebody taught me about art was in high school. After graduation i completed a compact study as an audio technician and this was my job for the last decades.

Coming from this tech background and turning towards arts was an approach to consolidate my potentials. On both tracks i am an autodidact, so my method applies for my activities in sound and visual art equally. Usually i pick up what is of interest or what is actually needed. Interdisciplinary. I am observing and learning. From media, from people and from life itself. This journey of extending my horizon is personal progression and self-awareness the same time. It feels like coming home and finding my place.

Art-wise, the „lack of proper education“ amazingly can turn into an advantage: In the perspective of maintaining an unbiased, unfiltered access to the perception of art. Also with regard to allowing an intuitive workflow, by following that direct impulse way before the brain starts to evaluate. Furthermore a structured preparation, acquired by a technician may form the foundation for an artist to sink into the creative process …or chaos.

I have been a freelancer all my life, independent. But it’s all about interdependence, collaboration and synergy as well. I feel a strong connection with the underground, with street- and subculture. And i am not particularly a friend of hierarchys and authorities and i question them. I dislike stereotypes and i am not into the commercial or superficial. For me it is more deepness, the subtle and obscure that catches my attention and that i commit myself to. I relate to alternative, fringe, counterculture.

analog | digital | natural

My dad awakend my senses for the treasures of nature at an early age. He sparked my interest for vegetation, rocks, driftwood and the wealth of colors, forms and surfaces, as well as the fine structures and patterns they contain. I am fascinated by this magic since then and i deeply feel nature, she nourishes me.

My passion for textures also includes synthetic materials, analog created patterns, paintings, photographs and those generated in the digital domain. For me, also regarding sound, there are no limitations: analog or digital tech – in the end both is human-made and therefore likewise artificial.

I am a person with contrasts. Introverted, intuitive, emotional in some respects. Straightforward, structured, and rational in others. It may sound paradoxical, but this can fit harmoniously. Irreconcilable differences combined …in the best case scenario. This interplay is a “state of flux“, a field of tension that i am oscillating within. De facto, it is part of my dharma, to balance contradictions. This requires occasionally some sort of reorientation and realignment.

Accordingly, my influences are on a wide scale, just to name a few:

Art movements from impressionism, expressionism, dada, pop art,  naturalism, realism, surrealism, futurism… And musical genres from electronic to jazz, funk, hip-hop, dub, industrial, psychedelic, punk…

This leads to diverse results in my own works.

sounds | stuffs | thangs

I work similarly as a visual artist as i work as a sound artist/producer/musician. However i don’t describe me as a musician. My focus is on sounds, noises, effects and the sound impression. I want to explore fresh colors and forms and new genres.

I work and play with field recordings, samples, sounds, rhythmic patterns and beats created by analog gear, softwaresynths, algorhythms, whatever catches my attention and arouses my curiosity.

I collect, sort, alienate, recombinate, blend, mangle, morph, transform… Sometimes i edit very heavily, accompanied with a lot of processing, just to see where it leads. In other cases i use just slight treatment and sometimes i leave it almost untouched, to preserve its pure beauty. I have preferences for strong syncopated grooves and complex loops that interact with a solid bass foundation. Alltogether they should form a dense, athmospheric sound image.

There are many equivalents for the visual art part: Organic materials, plants, woods, stones, also shards, glass, waste, oddities, junk…  findlings and foundlings i call them. With their infinite range of textures and details, patina and rust, they find their way to a consistent overall appearance, a conceptional piece of art …or simply are studies.

In all sectors i have a faible for happy accidents, coincidences and fragments. These are perfect starting points. I make use of numerous concepts to acomplish my missions and i have no scruples to freely use and combine techniques and procedures. This way i am broadly aligned.

Conducted by my gut feeling and emotions i navigate through what excites and thrills me.

Whenever i am in this creative flow i feel deeply connected with my inner child.
